Carlos Jaureguialzo – Matrimonio AKA Marriage (2013)

Quote:
Argentine director Carlos Jaureguialzo offers a fine take on the challenge with Matrimonio (Marriage), which will have its world premiere at the Miami International Film Festival this Sunday. By focusing on a day in the life of one weary couple he and screenwriter Marcela Silva y Nasute reveal a sometimes grim, often humorous, and ultimately affirming observation of aged love.

Esteban (Darío Grandinetti) and Molly (Cecilia Roth) have been married for over 20 years, and they clearly seem worn out. The film opens with a montage covering the detritus of this couple’s Buenos Aires apartment and, by extension, their life together. Everything is shown in super close-up: details of photos in picture frames, the water-stains on the edges of drying glasses in the kitchen, the top of a perfume bottle and the face of Esteban, staring up at the ceiling, waiting to get up in the morning to face the day.

After showering and leaving a cup of tea on a nightstand by a lump of sheets that Molly has yet to rise from, he tells his wife, “I’m leaving.” Though this is the start of just another day, his tired tone of voice sounds loaded with something much deeper.

Inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses, director Jaureguialzo (his second feature in just over 10 years) presents the day following the point of view of Esteban and then again through Molly’s eyes, who only rises from bed once her husband is long gone. Diving into dramatic irony, some interesting, if at times heavy-handed, coincidences in their lives occur that seem to subvert their mutually tired feelings for each other.

Forgiving the movie a few too many precious moments of happenstance, Matrimonio maintains a brisk pace featuring a couple of Spanish cinema’s wizened delights of acting. Grandinetti and Roth are probably best known for appearances in a pair of films by Pedro Almodóvar (he in Talk To Her, she in All About My Mother). Both bring a charming humility to their roles that only comes with age.

With respect to Esteban and Molly’s wedded malaise, no one side stands out as someone for the audience to root for above the other. Any faults in the marriage seem equally attributable to the sometimes stereotypical shortcomings of the other’s gender. The two leads bring the pathos to raise the material beyond caricature, however. The cloud of time has done a profound number on how these two perceive one another, and the film captures that well. Outsiders shrug off grumbles of seemingly crippling issues by either husband or wife during confessional scenes as petty nonsense.

Argentine cinema made its mark on the new millennium with often bleak and cynical films that also played with dark humor. But Matrimonio offers something more complex and less of a cop-out that pays tremendous respect to living life. The film ends on a note not so much filled with hope but a comfortable resignation that in order to act as a unit, members of a couple should be able to respect and recognize the individuals involved.

Quote:
Chili-born Italian director Marco Bechis’s second feature is a political drama based on his experiences with the military regime of Argentina (1976-1980) when he lived there. Maria (Antonella Costa) is a militant activist in an organization that is fighting the oppressive dictatorship. She teaches reading and writing in the suburbs of Buenos Aires in an area of shantytowns. She lives in a decrepit rooming house with her mother Diane (Dominique Sanda), who rents out some rooms. One of the lodgers, a shy young man named Felix (Carlos Echeverria), is in love with Maria. He seems to have come from nowhere and is supposed to be working in a garage. One morning, Maria is kidnapped by a military squad in civilian clothes in front of her mother and is taken to the garage ‘Olimpo,’ one of the many well-known torture places in the city, which operate to the general indifference of the inhabitants. Tigre, the head of the center (Enrique Pineyro) appoints their best man ? Felix ? to the job of making Maria talk. Felix is overcome by his feelings for Maria, but Maria is determined to exploit the situation for her survival. Tender love scenes between Maria and Felix enhance the story, but the intensity never reaches the heights of some of the classics of the world cinema with a similar theme, such as The Night Porter. Bechis exerts too much control over his characters and narrative to allow an emotional rupture. 52nd Cannes Film Festival, 1999.

Edgardo Castro – La noche (2016)

Quote:
Gritty journey through the sexual underbelly of Buenos Aires, with graphic depictions of the highs and lows in one man’s quest for intimacy.

The story tells, from an accentuated hyper-realistic aesthetic, the life of Martin, a man in his forties who is desperately lonely and seeks, through sex, some company, to spend that time of which nothing seems to be expected. Under this constant desolation, he finds in cocaine, alcohol and in some other orgy a state of momentary pleasure every night.

Martin moves around Buenos Aires at night, picking up guys, going to clubs, scoring drugs and having sex. Sometimes he’s paying and sometimes his trans sex-worker friend or another woman takes him along for a threesome. With this matter-of-fact premise, first-time director Edgardo Castro (who also stars as Martin) takes us through the sexual underworld of the city. His film perfectly – and painfully – captures the feeling of being totally messed-up and of coming down, humiliated, and heading homeward in the early hours of the morning. It’s bleak and uncompromising yet compelling. Its grungy shooting style matches the graphic material and there is something of Gaspar Noé to La Noche’s provocation. If the film refuses to question Martin’s motivations, or enquire as to the reason for his out-at-sea emotional state, surprising moments of tenderness offer a glimpse of intimacy and connection, accentuating the film’s incredible power.

A dizzying, endless and unique way all night setbacks. Sex, drugs and drinks alternate between meeting and encounter, creating a continuous openly, in front of a camera as bold as curious, who dares to cross it all.

Quote:
In a picturesque country house in Buenos Aires, Fernando gathers his mates for a boys-only vacation. Free from work, responsibilities and their girlfriends, this close-knit gang of bros kick back by the pool, sunning their impeccably toned bodies and sharing pot-fuelled stories of sexual conquests. The guys have known each other for years, only this time Fernando has brought with him newcomer Germán, a friend from his taekwondo class, who neglects to tell the group that he’s gay. As the lazy summer days disappear, the connection between Fernando and Germán grows and slowly the boundaries of their relationship begin to blur. A veritable masterclass in will-they-won’t-they suspense, this gloriously protracted, beautifully nuanced tease is both wantonly titillating and disarmingly sweet. Working with co-director Martín Farina, Marco Berger’s inquisitive camera luxuriates in the homoerotics of this male-centric milieu, lingering longingly over the semi-clad bodies with unapologetic gay abandon.

Eduardo Williams – El auge del humano AKA The Human Surge (2016)

Quote:
A 3-country observation of the millenials in Argentina, Mozambique, and the Philippines.

Leo Goldsmith for Cinema Scope wrote:
Williams’ cinema is one of vectors: across borders, networks, and states of being. These routes are not simply migrations, although social, economic, and geographical impermanence is certainly central to his logistical mapping of his young characters’ lives. Rather, Williams’ films follow a system of intersecting lines and pathways that carry us beyond the mundane surface of reality to other places entirely.Full

Nick Pinkerton for Artforum wrote:
Williams endeavors to pass through the wiring of intricate networks in the case of both the internet and the anthill. The casual air disguises The Human Surge’s thematic coherency, beginning with the title’s invocation of organic-technological hybridity, as echoed in the analog-to-digital progression of its format shift, or in a moment where a child is heard measuring the human genome in gigabytes. While precious few filmmakers have seriously attempted to address the enormous cognitive earthquake represented by the internet’s colonization of daily life, Williams dares and is actually up for the challenge. From an interview last year:

“My brain and practice have been transformed by technology. For example, by the video games that I played when I was young. In video games, you have these different levels that you advance to, moving through multiple spaces. And then the chats—at many points in my life, it seemed like online chatting was my only means of communication. It is a different way of speaking, of connecting. I didn’t think of it at first, but this is why I structure my films the way I do. It’s about how I see and relate to the world.”

Inasmuch as his film’s subjects have a single unifying purpose, it is to get themselves online—cadging working cell phones from friends or ranging around in search of a wifi signal. Binaries are invoked only to be busted wide open. Williams shows us ways of life at once state of the art and primitive, borderless and highly parochial, under the sway of both science and superstition. In a discursive conversation about “Black Magic,” two of the Mozambique youths muse over “people controlling one another from afar”—which, of course, is exactly what happens on the Chaturbate site they log onto. And while a sense of threatening environmental cataclysm hangs over the movie from the early images of streets flooded by an unspoken catastrophe, the film is also suffused with moments of bucolic natural beauty, of unspoiled beaches and forests and open fields in what seems like a perpetual gloaming. The mood of The Human Surge is mostly one of repose, but repose haunted by the prospect of work, the threat of which is felt throughout the film—shirking it, submitting to it, dreading waking up to it, getting fired, walking off of the job. (And yes, those are worker ants.) It makes for an exhilarating, boldly paradoxical experience—a headlong dive into the rich, knotty, sticky undergrowth amid a proliferation of tidy, well-lit paths. Quote:
An impressive example of the vitality and the formal potential of silent cinema, the long-awaited second feature by Esteban Sapir is also welcome proof of the continuing attraction it has for contemporary film makers. Inspired by the cinema of Murnau and Lang, of Eisenstein and Vertov, La Antena is nevertheless a very modern film. Not only in the theme – monopolisation, consumerism, cultural dulling – is there talk of an update, also the form, the editing and the techniques used reveal that La Antena is a film of our own time.

The fairytale allegory continues to surprise from scene to scene with extensive, cleverly-made sets, beautiful use of words on screen and, not to forget, excellent acting. In a wintry metropolis in the year xxx, the mercilessly bad Mr TV rules. The whole city is without a voice and he has monopolised word and image. People watch TV and eat the TV meals produced by Mr TV. Mr TV is working on a sinister plan with a dangerous hypnotic machine that operates through the TV to ensure that all life will be subjected to him forever. To achieve this, he kidnaps the only one who still has The Voice – a stunningly beautiful singer. An inventor witnesses the kidnapping and flees with his family to an old broadcasting mast in an attempt to thwart approaching doom.

An existentialist fable about a woman who lives with a pack of dogs on the very edge of the populated world, with minimal contact with other people. The seasons come and go. On life and survival, love and death.

The next gem in our New Argentine Cinema series is one of El Pampero collective’s most recent triumphs. Dog Lady finds in the outstanding performance of Verónica Llinás (also co-director) an enigmatic, quietly potent screen presence able to challenge the pillars of our society without need of words.

Narcisa Hirsch (Berlin, 1928), a pioneer of experimental cinema in Argentina, produced continuously in various media since the 60s. In the beginning, as a painter and illustrator, her works were exhibited at the Gallery Lirolay, which, like the Instituto Di Tella, was the most important art gallery in Buenos Aires in the 60s. She conducted performances and happenings, and was part of the group of filmmakers formed by Marie Louise Alemann, Claudio Caldini, Horacio Vallereggio, Juan Villola and Juan José Mugni, exhibiting their films outside the circuit of theaters and institutions, with the exception of the Goethe Institute, an organization that during the last military dictatorship in Argentina accompanied this movement and gave a formal context to it.

Synopsis
The release of Lucrecia Martel’s La Ciénaga heralded the arrival of an astonishingly vital and original voice in Argentine cinema. With a radical and disturbing take on narrative, beautiful cinematography, and a highly sophisticated use of on- and offscreen sound, Martel turns her tale of a dissolute bourgeois extended family, whiling away the hours of one sweaty, sticky summer, into a cinematic marvel. This visceral take on class, nature, sexuality, and the ways that political turmoil and social stagnation can manifest in human relationships is a drama of extraordinary tactility, and one of the great contemporary film debuts.

“El poder de las tinieblas” (Power of Darkness) is a film based upon a famous novel by argentinian writer Ernesto Sábato INFORME SOBRE CIEGOS. Its plot is simple and powerful: a person begins to believe that every blind man he sees is persecuting him. This fear is gradually growing to reach unexpectable points. The plot is ok, but actors are not playing good enough and, therefore, the film is not so good as the book. Anyway, I think it is a good defy to comprehend some of the not always successful relationships between literature and cinema.

Plot Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
Like Solanas’ previous film Tangos (1985), South is a film about a forced exile (in the form of imprisonment) and a painful reunion in the midst of political turmoil. It is also a story about the healing power of nostalgia. The story is set in 1983 just after the fall of the military dictatorship and the restoration of the democracy. For the past five years, Floreal has been a political prisoner. He is released in the evening, but rather than returning straight home to his wife Rosi, he decides to wander around to gather his thoughts and sort through his mixed emotions concerning not only the deaths of his closest friends, but also the lonely, long-suffering Rosi’s affair with Floreal’s best friend Roberto. Everything in his old neighborhood has changed dramatically and as Floreal aimlessly wanders, a dense fog blankets the political pamphlet covered streets, lending a dreamlike atmosphere to the night. Occasionally, he is visited by the ghosts of former friends and co-workers. Meanwhile, Rosi nervously waits in her bedroom for Floreal to return. AllMovieGuide
